The Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Edkham Akbulatov met with the experts of the international APEC Low Carbon Model Town Project

More than a year ago, in April 2016, the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Edkham Akbulatov held a meeting with the leading experts of the Asia Pacific Energy Research Center, where it was decided that Krasnoyarsk would apply for the participation in the APEC Low Carbon Model Town Project. Last year in December Krasnoyarsk became the winner of the tender for the implementation of the 7th Stage of the APEC Low Carbon Model Town Project. The Krasnoyarsk stage of the project focuses on the application of low-carbon technologies to the inland territories with cold climate. As a result of the following competitive selection conducted by APEC, Nikken Sekkei (Japan) was chosen as an expert company to conduct the research.

Today the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Edkham Akbulatov held a meeting with representatives of the Japanese company, within the framework of which preliminary results of their research were discussed.

The executive director of the Nikken Sekkei Research Institute (Japan) Shinji Yamamura told about the current implementation of the research program: "We were able to look at the power supply facilities of the city. We paid special attention to boiler houses, CHPs, but at the same time we were able to appreciate the unique natural landscape of Krasnoyarsk and its vicinity. Particularly for this project we have formed a team of international experts. We are working not only on specific proposals for the city's energy supply system, but also on the transport system modernization, the housing stock energy efficiency improvement and other aspects. I'd like to thank the Administration of Krasnoyarsk for their constant active cooperation and provision of all the information that we need for the research. We use the method of computer simulation in our work and are currently preparing specific proposals that will help Krasnoyarsk reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere."

In particular, to improve the environmental situation in Krasnoyarsk, international experts propose to abandon the system of small boiler houses, concentrate on the reduction of energy losses in central heating and hot water pipelines, reuse the energy that is currently wasted and use alternative energy sources such as solar energy more actively.

"Annually about 6 million tons of coal are burned in Krasnoyarsk. Therefore, it is very important for us to see in your presentation of the results of your work the exact amount of emissions we will be able to reduce, when implementing your recommendations," addressed the Japanese experts Edkham Akbulatov.

Mr. Yamamura accepted the Mayor's proposal and said that the complete report that will be presented at the end of September will contain all necessary figures.

Closing up the meeting, the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Edkham Akbulatov said: "We expect that the application of new technologies in the field of ecology and management of the housing and municipal complex will let us find important solutions for the city. I hope that the Krasnoyarsk scientists from the Siberian Federal University will join the team of international experts. Of course, the participation of Krasnoyarsk in the Low Carbon Model Town Project is only the beginning of a huge amount of future work that will result in ecological balance here, in Krasnoyarsk."
