Scientists of  the Institute of Biophysics SB RAS, Federal Research Center “Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS” have told about the closed life support system of BIOS-3 in the pages of the journal “Life Sciences in Space Research”. The development of Krasnoyarsk specialists is a step towards the creation of lunar or Martian bases.

According to scientists, fish is one of those food products that must be included in the astronauts ration. It contains high-quality protein and a high concentration of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6). If you actively use fish, so, there is a  question - what to do with the scales, bones and guts. Krasnoyarsk scientists found a way out of the situation: they have developed a technology that allows converting  fish waste into food additives for nutrient solutions used for growing wheat. In the wet incineration, organic waste is converted into inorganic salts.

“We showed, that wheat plants grown in a nutrient solution prepared from mineralized fish waste and human waste produced a higher yield compared to the yield obtained using only mineralized human excreta, - doctor of biological sciences, professor, Head of the Laboratory for Management of Phototrophic Biosynthesis of the Institute of Biophysics Alexander Tikhomirov says - In addition, fish waste has become a source of additional mineral elements for wheat”.

Now scientists are looking for ways to process other wastes, in particular, packaging and sanitary materials.
