APEC Low Carbon Model Town (LCMT) international project experts will visit Krasnoyarsk at the end of March

Looking back we can remember that in April 2016 the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Edkham Akbulatov had a meeting with the leading experts of the Asia-Pacific Energy Research Center, where the decision about the nomination of Krasnoyarsk for the LCMT Project  was made. Last year, in December it was announced that the regional center had successfully won the bid for the implementation of the Phase 7 of the APEC LCMT Project. The project implies the application of low carbon technologies to the inland territory (remote from the sea) with high demand for heating and air-conditioning.

As a result of the competitive selection process undertaken by APEC, for the research in Krasnoyarsk was chosen "Nikken Sekkei" company (Japan). Today, the Mayor of Krasnoyarsk, Edkham Akbulatov, held a video conference with the representatives of the Japanese company, during which the stages of the project implementation were discussed.

In his review of the research program, the Mayor noted: "The development into a low carbon town is the main direction we should follow, developing new urban areas and micro-districts. At the same time, we realize that Krasnoyarsk has a lot of issues that, as they say, have been "inherited" by the city. We should work to increase the energy efficiency of existing housing stock and public utilities, to reduce the negative effects of urban enterprises, and to improve the existing transport system. "I understand that we will not be able to find answers to all of our questions at once, but I expect that in our work we can address the most pressing issues of the city's life".

The executive director of the Nikken Sekkei Research Institute, Shinji Yamamura agreed with the Mayor, that the issues of low carbon cities development are currently a matter of concern for most megalopolises in the world.

"The question of achieving zero loss energy consumption and reducing the environmental impact is now one of the most urgent ones. Our company has a unique experience in designing low-energy buildings that we have already used in Krasnoyarsk. We will be happy to share our inventions and are looking forward to productive work", said Mr. Yamamura.

In his turn, Edkham Akbulatov pointed out that the Siberian Federal University was not accidentally chosen to be the video conference site: "We are just at the beginning of our way. The APEC international experts study is a starting point. I believe that the research aimed at improving the energy efficiency of the city should be carried out on a regular basis. In this regard, our Siberian scientists, the Siberian Federal University, can take the most active part in the research".

The visit of the delegation of the APEC Low Carbon Model Town (LCMT) international project experts to Krasnoyarsk is scheduled for the end of March this year. During the visit, the experts will conduct studies of the energy supply system of the city. In addition we need to say that as a result of the project Krasnoyarsk will receive a report with recommendations for the implementation of low carbon technologies. This report will serve as a model for the design of low carbon cities in Russia and other APEC countries.
