The International Day of Forests is held annually on 21 March to raise awareness of the importance of forests to people and their vital role in poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and food security. The day was established by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012. Each year, various events celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations.

Krasnoyarsk Region is first and foremost renowned for its grand scale pine forests and nature reserves like Krasnoyarsk Stolby, playing main role in the Krasnoyarsk heating system and providing electricity among other functions.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day.  World Water Day is held annually as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Krasnoyarsk’s most vital source of water is its main river Yenisei, one of the largest and most beautiful rivers in the world. The river arises from the Sayan Mountains and, having passed all climatic zones of Siberia, runs into the Kara Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The second of all rivers in Russia, Yenisei sustains three hydroelectric power stations based in the region, which makes it pretty much essential for us locals.

Let’s use both Forests and Water Days as a time to remember the fact that we owe nature and discuss how we can tackle the global crises in environmental sustainability, sanitation and economical matters!
